Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting announced on April 1, that Superstar Rajinikanth will be honored with prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year, 2021.
The award will be conferred on the actor on May, 3 2021.
WHAT IS DADASAHEB PHALKE AWARD?
Dadasaheb Phalke award is Government’s highest honor for Indian Cinema. The purpose of this award is to honor the recipient for his or her “outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema.”
The recipient of the award is selected by a committee which consists of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry.
The award is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals. It is an organization set up by the Ministry of Information and broadcasting.
The award comprises of :-
- Swarna Kamal ( Golden Lotus)
- Medallion
- A Shawl and,
- A cash prize of Rs. 1,000,000.
HISTORY OF THE AWARD
The Government of India introduced the award to commemorate “The Father of Indian Cinema”, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke for his contribution to the Indian Cinema.
He was an Indian Filmmaker who directed India’s first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra (1913).
