Step by Step Guide on How to become a Law Professor in India

Being a law professor in its own is a moment of pride as the law professors are teaching the upcoming judges and the advocates of our country in whom hands the law of our nation is protected. There are the following steps for becoming a law professor in India:

STEP 1: Getting a Law degree:

The one should possess a law degree whether 3 year LLB course or 5 year integrated course.

 Things to do in Law College if you want to be a law professor:

  • Do internships with NGO wherein you have to teach children.
  • Start taking home tuitions for the subject that you think you are an expert.
  • Start teaching at a coaching institution.
  • Writing Research Papers.

STEP 2: Get an enrollment number and give AIBE Exam (Not Mandatory but suggested)

  • After completing the law degree, you are eligible to apply for enrollment number.
  • After getting your enrollment number you can give All India Bar Examination.

STEP 3: Getting a Masters degree in Law:

Give entrance exams to get into a good institution.

STEP 4: Appearing for UGC-NET Examination

What is UGC-NET?

UGC-NET (University Grants Commission – National Eligibility test) is a test to determine the eligibility of Indian Nationals for ‘Assistant Professor’ and ‘Junior Research Fellowship’ and ‘Assistant Professor’ in Indian Universities and Colleges.

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidate who are pursuing their Master’s degree or equivalent course or candidates who have appeared for their qualifying Master’s degree examination and whose result is still awaited or candidates whose qualifying examinations have been delayed may also apply for this test.

The person should be passed his Masters degree with at least 55% marks for assistant professor/ JRF( 50%  marks in case of SC/ST/OBC/PWD/ Third Gender)

Such candidates must complete their Master’s degree or equivalent examination within two years from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.

There is no upper age limit in applying for UGC-NET for Assistant professor.

  STEP 5: Ph. D Degree (3-6 years)

Ph. D Degree has been made mandatory for promotion to Assistant Professor in colleges from 01.07.2021.
